THE JET SETTING PET – TRAVEL TIPS BEFORE YOU GO...
Be honest about your pet’s ability to travel. Don’t fly your pet if it is very young, old, ill, pregnant or recovering from surgery. If you’re in doubt, ask your veterinarian. Airlines reserve the right to reject any animal that they deem to be violent, ill or in severe physical distress.
Contact the airline as soon as you know you will be traveling with your pet. Each airline has restrictions about the types and number of pets it will transport. Let the airline know the type of pet you have, its breed, size and weight, and the size of its carrier.
Make reservations to fly non-stop whenever possible or, at least, to minimize flight connections. Request a forward seat on the right side of the aircraft. Avoid weekend or holiday flights as they tend to be more crowded and your pet may not get the attention it needs.
Remember that most airlines won’t fly animals during periods of extreme temperatures—when the weather is too hot or too cold. During the summer, try to schedule a very early morning or late evening flight. During the winter, it’s best to fly midday.
Confirm with the airline that
you will be bringing your pet 24 to 48 hours before departure.
Make sure your pet’s shipping crate meets airline requirements, is properly ventilated and of adequate size for your pet to stand up, turn around and lie down in comfortably.
Place an absorbent towel
in the crate. You can also place
an item of clothing you have worn but not washed, such as a t-shirt, in the
crate. Your pet may be comforted by your scent.
Label your crate appropriately. Tape a “Live Animal” label with letters at least 1” high on top and on one side of the crate. Indicate the top with “Arrows” on at least 2 sides. Attach “Feeding Instructions” on the outside of the crate, with a small plastic ziplock bag of food, if necessary. Attach “Contact Information” on the outside of the crate, with your pet’s name, your name, addresses and phone numbers at origin and destination.
Attach two empty dishes to the crate, one for food and one for water.
Clip your pet’s nails. Brush your pet to remove all loose hair.
Never put a choke, pinch or training collar, a muzzle or a
leash on your pet. Make a temporary
paper collar for your dog with its name, your name, address and phone number on
it. Safety collars which attach with
elastic or Velcro are recommended for your cat.

ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Depending on your origin or destination, you will require
some or all of the following: a health certificate, proof of vaccinations,
import permits, export permits, customs clearances, consulate documentation and
quarantine arrangements.
Your pet has three options for travel…as carry-on (in cabin), as checked baggage or as cargo…depending on the airline’s regulations, the flight schedule, the size of the aircraft and the size of your pet.
To qualify for carry-on, the pet’s carrier must fit entirely under the seat in front of you. Size and weight limitations vary by airline and aircraft.
If your pet is flying cargo, then request “priority” or “counter-to-counter” shipping.
The cargo area, like the cabin of the airplane, is both pressurized and temperature-controlled. Some aircraft maintain active ventilation systems while others may have passive ventilation occurring while in flight.
Sedatives are strongly
discouraged, as their effects inhibit respiration through muscular relaxation,
lower the central venous blood pressure, and alter the ability of the animal to
control its body temperature.
Give your pet water and a light meal, but don’t feed your pet in the two hours prior to departure, as a full stomach can cause discomfort.
For the flight, fill the water dish 2/3 full and freeze the night before to add to the crate at the last minute. Don’t, however, give your pet ice cubes as this may be a choking hazard.
Allow up to two extra hours for check-in. Take a leash and collar with you, so that
you can walk your pet prior to departure, on an extended layover and upon
arrival.
