Moving to Singapore

The Republic of Singapore is an island city-state in Southeast Asia at the southern tip of Malaysia. It is connected to the Malaysian state of Johor by a 1.3 km-long causeway that serves as both a road and a rail link. The Philippines are northeast; Indonesia is south, east, and west. The country consists of Singapore Island and 57 offshore islets.

Prosperous in finance, trade, and high-tech manufacturing, the capital city is modern, clean, and efficient. Chinese, Indian, and Malay traditions create a fascinating diversity of languages, foods, and dress. Singaporeans are courteous, honest, and polite while still pursuing success.

Singapore is a republic within the British Commonwealth and is a parliamentary democracy. The head of state is the president, who is elected by universal suffrage for a six-year term. He has a veto over financial matters, public appointments, and national security detentions, but his post has been considered largely ceremonial. Executive power lies with the prime minister, who is appointed by the president, and a 14-member cabinet. There is a 93-member parliament, 84 of whom are elected for five-year terms, and nine of whom the president appoints.

Under the PAP, Singapore has become a prosperous regional center of finance, trade, and high-tech manufacturing. By encouraging private enterprise and establishing the world's most successful network of "government-linked companies" or GLCs, Singapore has overcome the disadvantage of limited natural resources and a small, although well-educated and highly-skilled and motivated, population. The government encourages a policy of supplementing its native talent with talent from abroad, but will not take jobs away from native Singaporeans.

Living space in high-density Singapore may seem hard to find and expensive in some areas, but there is generally good availability and reasonable choice, and plenty of turnover. Older properties are undergoing renovations, and new complexes reach the market monthly. Generally, all homes in Singapore are built in Western- style and to high standards.

The expatriate community is very well served with schools catering to different nationalities, including Australian, British, Canadian, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Swiss and U.S. All except the Japanese teach from kindergarten through secondary school. Curricula generally reflecting the standards of the countries of origin of the students are offered.
