Moving to Taiwan

Taiwan - also referred to as the Republic of China (ROC) - is located between the East China Sea and the South China Sea, between Hong Kong and Japan.

Expatriates in Taiwan enjoy one of the highest standards of living in Asia. The economy is strong - among the world's 15 largest - the country is technologically advanced, inflation and unemployment are low, and the culture is rich. Taiwan has become a major investor in mainland China, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The country is densely populated with people living fast-paced lives.

Politics

Taiwan's constitution provides for an executive with a president elected for a four-year term and a prime minister and cabinet selected by the president but responsible to Parliament. There is a 225-member unicameral legislature, the Li fa Yuan. A constitutional amendment has been proposed that would reduce the legislature to 113 seats in 2007.

Property

For the most part, Taiwan's major cities offer apartment living, although there are single-family homes. Due to air pollution in Taipei, newcomers often try to find housing at higher elevations than the city.

Even in the suburbs, apartments are the norm. Building maintenance, parking, and security services or equipment are important elements of any potential apartment. Many apartment buildings charge monthly for these services.

Schools

Schools with instruction in English, German, French, and Japanese are available to the international community in Taiwan. Formerly separate schools, the British, French, and German schools have joined to form the Taipei European School.

English-language schools are the only ones to offer primary- and secondary-level classes, culminating in the International Baccalaureat. The school year generally runs from August or September through June or July. Most private schools in Taipei provide transportation for their students.
