Moving to Vietnam

Located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam stretches along the South China Sea from the Tropic of Cancer in the north, halfway to the Equator in the south. It is bordered by Cambodia and Laos to the west and China to the north. You will generally encounter high levels of enthusiasm and optimism among the Vietnamese, as well as energy and a desire to make progress and become more modern in outlook. Nevertheless, concern still exists to preserve the stabilizing influences of more traditional values.

Politically, the Vietnamese constitution approved in 1992 affirms the Communist Party one-party system, delineates government reorganization and increases economic freedom. The most important powers, besides the Communist Party, are the executive agencies of the president, who functions as the head of state and nominal head of the military; and the Prime Minister, the head of the cabinet and ministries.

"Vietnam is seeking to find its place in the modern world, with some notable success. The economy has expanded and grown rapidly in recent years, and this trend is forecast to continue.

During the 1990s, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City transformed into two of the busiest and most expensive centers of activity in Southeast Asia. Vietnam's market potential continues to attract investment, lured by the prospect of speedy expansion. "

Housing options include town houses, villas, single family homes, and serviced apartments. There is some housing within suburban complexes providing security and other centralized amenities. A number of individual private homes are also available for rent. Few homes in Vietnam have a garage or off street parking.

Expatriates on short assignments or without families usually opt for a serviced apartment in a city center district. Families typically choose an urban villa or one of the large houses in a suburban compound located farther out of town.

There are English-speaking international schools and French Lycees in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
