FAQs

If you are moving internationally you may have many questions you need answers for. Here you can find the the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about relocating to a new country. Our guide covers all the basics of international relocation.

For some countries the import of food is prohibited, please see the FIDI customs guides for country specific information. We recommend that you do not include any food in shipments as it can cause delays with customs clearance and additional charges. Your Global Move Specialist will be able to provide you with more specific information on your destination. You cannot include any food in air freight shipments.

The import of alcohol is prohibited in some countries. For countries where it is permitted a detailed inventory of the alcohol will need to be submitted to customs, and duties charges will apply, the rate varies by country. For more information, please see the FIDI customs guide.

The customs clearance process and time frame varies in each country, your Global Move Specialist will advise the door to door transit time to your destination.

Working hours vary in each country. In the UK “normal”working hours for our crews are from 9.00am-5.00pm Mon – Fri. (excluding bank holidays). However we can provide services out of normal hours for an additional cost.

Please see the attached list for air freight prohibited items, for sea freight prohibited items please see the FIDI guide.

The time it will take depends on the size of your move, after your pre move survey is completed your Global Move Specialist will confirm your detailed move plan with you. On the first day of packing the team leader will introduce his/herself and perform a “walk through” to explain what will happen during the packing. They will use their experience to suggest the best process, however they will always be flexible around your personal requirements, for example if the packing is for more than one day they will leave beds and essentials until last to minimise any disruption for you, if you have small children any toys etc can be left in one room and packed at the end to reduce any anxiety for children.

When valuing your items you should always declare the replacement value at destination i.e. what it would cost you to replace that item in your new country of residence. For full details on our Shipment Protection Policy and terms and conditions please follow the links.
