Corporate Moving — Italy enforces EORI number for all household goods shipments
From 1 December 2024, Italy requires all household goods shipments to include a valid Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number. This significant change affects both businesses and private individuals moving personal belongings. Previously, the Italian fiscal code (codice fiscale) was accepted for non-commercial shipments. Now, the fiscal code must include an ‘IT’ prefix and be validated by customs.
The regulation, announced in November 2024, applies to shipments entering, exiting, or transiting through Italy. It brings Italy in line with EU customs standards, enhancing authorities’ ability to access registration data via a centralised electronic system. Similar requirements have existed in other EU countries for years, but Italy had maintained a more flexible approach until now.
Private individuals face the biggest adjustment, as they must now apply for an EORI number despite not being considered economic operators. Applications must be submitted through the Italian Customs Agency, with documentation such as proof of identity, address, and fiscal code. Registration typically takes three to five working days.
