Electronic visa application process now mandatory in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) has mandated that visa applications under six major admission policies/schemes must now be submitted exclusively online. Traditional submission methods (in-person, by post, or drop-in-box) are no longer accepted.

Overview
From January 17, 2025, applicants must use the ImmD’s electronic services to complete the entire visa process, including submission, payment, and collection of “e-Visas.” Eligibility and approval criteria remain unchanged.
Who will be affected?
Applicants under the following policies/schemes:
- General Employment Policy (including employment and investment as entrepreneurs),
- Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals,
- Capital Investment Entrant Scheme,
- Training,
- Working Holiday Scheme,
- Residence as Dependants.
Background
This initiative aligns with the ImmD’s ongoing efforts to digitize services, aiming to streamline processes and improve convenience for applicants.
Impact
For applicants:
- The entire process, from submission to payment and the issuance of the “e-Visa,” can now be completed online.
For corporate businesses:
- Companies employing talent under affected schemes should educate their employees about the new requirements and facilitate electronic submissions where necessary.
Date of implementation
The new policy took effect on January 17, 2025, and applies to all applications submitted on or after this date.
Santa Fe recommendation/ measure
To help clients adapt to this new development, our company has implemented the following measures:
- New Digital Measures:
- Real-Time Online Questionnaire: Applicants can complete an easy-to-use online assessment to ensure their eligibility and gather necessary information before submission.
- Document Upload Portal: A secure platform is now available for clients to upload their supporting documents, which we will verify and submit electronically on their behalf.
- Traditional Support Measures:
- Dedicated Immigration Assistants: Our in-house immigration assistants are available to pick up physical documents from designated addresses daily for clients who prefer traditional support. These documents will then be digitized and processed for submission.
- Training Session: Our consultants can guide you through the new submission process, ensuring all requirements are met.
- Timely Updates: Our team will continue to monitor the impact of this new policy and keep you updated on any further changes.
