Thailand Medical Certificate Not Required for Work Permit Application under BOI

The Employment Department has announced that a medical certificate will no longer be required for work permit application and renewal under BOI (Board of Investment), effective 09 October, 2019.

Who will be affected?

All foreigners who are applying for or going to apply for a new work permit or work permit renewal under BOI.

Background:

In an effort to ease the immigration process for foreign employees under BOI companies, the Employment Department has announced that a medical certificate is no longer required for work permit applications and renewals.

In the past, a medical certificate was not required for work permit applications and renewals for foreign employees under BOI companies. However, recently the government had investigated cases where foreign employees under BOI companies were carrying contagious diseases. Hence the enforcement of a medical check became effective on Aug 19, 2019. To view our alert concerning these changes, click here.

After a few months’ trial, the government has decided to repeal their previous decision and remove medical certificate as part of the work permit requirements.

Impact:

This is positive news for both foreign employees and BOI companies. For employees who have completed their medical checkup, they can proceed with their work permit application or renewal as per normal. Employees who haven’t completed their medical checkup yet, there is no need to do so.
