Immigration update: UAE | Work Permit Now Possible For Men Residing in UAE on Family Visa

Work Permit Now Possible For Men Residing in UAE on Family Visa

The changes set out by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) will make it easier for men sponsored by their wives or mothers to be employed legally in the country.

Previously, men under their wife’s sponsorship or children on mother’s sponsorship were not allowed to have an employment permit or labour card reaching adulthood, meaning they had to find employment and subsequent visa themselves upon leaving school or university.

In contrast, daughters were allowed to be sponsored by their parents and allowed to have a labour card.

Similarly, a wife sponsored by a husband was allowed to have a labour card.

Impact :

  • The move is transformative to UAE labour laws.
  • The work permit facility will make it easier for a husband to find employment and undertake short-term contracts.
  • Sons sponsored by their parents will also benefit by being allowed to secure part or full-time work.
  • This cuts down the lead time for corporate companies to get people on board by employing individuals already in the country. This has an immediate benefit for companies.

Santa Fe Analysis :

  • The change in regulations means companies will now be able to hire male applicants without paying for their visas and medical insurance.
  • This also reduces the operational costs for employers as they don’t have to recruit professionals from outside the country.
  • By relaxing labour market requirements, the UAE is once again attempting to making it easier for foreign nationals to live and work in the country and encouraging corporate companies to hire available talent locally.
  • This is a step in the right direction and more importantly a sign of maturing labour market.
