Global Moving news and updates January 2025

The global corporate moving landscape continues to face significant disruptions as we enter 2025. Santa Fe Relocation is actively monitoring and responding to challenges including shipping line alliances, environmental regulations, capacity constraints, and geopolitical issues, ensuring our clients stay informed and prepared.

Capacity constraints and shipping delays

Major changes in shipping line alliances are set to disrupt global trade routes. The formation of new agreements such as the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk Lone, and the rebranding of THE Alliance to the Premier Alliance, have led to operational shifts. The Premier Alliance includes Yang Ming, HMM, and ONE. These transitions may cause delays, route changes, and reduced vessel frequency. Containers are increasingly being rolled to later sailings, complicating scheduling for corporate moves.

The continued diversion of Eastbound trades around the Cape of Good Hope due to geopolitical tensions has extended transit times. In addition, port congestion and void sailings in regions like the Middle East are leading to backlogs, further affecting shipments. Clients moving to Asia or Oceania should anticipate potential delays and secure vessel bookings well in advance.

Rising surcharges and fluctuating costs

Shipping lines are imposing additional charges to mitigate operational risks. Notably, a Work Disruption Surcharge of USD 1,000 per TEU is being applied to shipments to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts from January 20 due to impending port strikes. Clients should also prepare for Peak Season Surcharges on transatlantic routes and potential adjustments related to currency exchange rates, which are calculated at the time of vessel departure.
Fuel costs remain a volatile factor, with anticipated increases driven by energy supply challenges. Recent examples show adjustments adding up to USD 350 per container.

Regulatory updates and sustainability initiatives

The EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, effective January 1, introduces carbon intensity reporting and surcharges for emissions exceeding compliance limits. Shippers must now factor in additional costs when shipping via EU ports. These measures align with broader industry decarbonisation efforts, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Carbon Intensity Indicator, requiring vessels to meet stricter efficiency standards.
Meanwhile, inconsistent policies around lithium-ion batteries in shipments highlight ongoing challenges. Santa Fe advises clients to exclude these items from their consignments where possible to avoid fines or delays.

Strategic guidance for clients

Santa Fe Relocation recommends several steps to mitigate the impact of these disruptions:

  1. Plan early and communicate clearly: Advance planning is crucial to navigate capacity issues and ensure timely bookings. Open communication with relocation providers will help align schedules with shipping availability.
  2. Prioritise compliance: Stay informed about new regulations and provide the required documentation promptly to avoid delays and additional charges.
  3. Anticipate additional costs: Factor in potential surcharges, currency fluctuations, and fuel cost adjustments when budgeting for relocations.
  4. Collaborate with relocation experts: Partnering with experienced providers like Santa Fe ensures access to industry insights, negotiated freight contracts, and tailored solutions to minimise disruptions.

At Santa Fe Relocation, we are dedicated to supporting our clients through these developments with timely updates and strategic advice. Our team remains vigilant, monitoring industry changes to deliver tailored solutions that ensure business continuity.
