Thinking of moving to Camden?

If you’re looking for a lively and eclectic place to call home, Camden could be the right place for you. From the colourful streets, exciting music scene and regular celebrity sightings, Camden offers an entirely unique London experience.

Nestled into North London, along the banks of Regents Canal, the NW1 and NW5 area is known for its alternative culture scene. Residents enjoy the busy streets and markets and a very busy night life all week long. If you want to be close to live music venues, amazing green spaces and have almost limitless culinary options, Camden should meet all your needs.

Camden’s history

The borough of Camden, as it exists now, was created in 1965 when the boroughs of Holborn, Hampstead and St Pancras were combined. However, there have been settlers in the area since the Mesolithic age.

Camden Town, the heart of the borough, is named after the first Earl of Camden Charles Pratt. Thanks to its location on the river and the excellent transportation links, the area enjoyed great growth during the 18th and 19th century.

In the 1970’s the warehouses and locks were transformed from relics of the industrial age into tourist destinations, and the area has grown in popularity ever since.

The Camden culture

Camden has a unique culture built on an eclectic, alternative and diverse population. This special energy attracts a very youthful demographic, with the majority of the area’s residents being aged between 18 and 35. Moving here, you’ll experience the vibrant sense of community, which uniquely for London has residents staying for years, upsizing instead of moving out.

Key to the success of Camden is the amazing music and food culture. In fact, the area’s the fourth most popular tourist destination in London. The neighbourhood’s famous live music venues have launched many huge music careers and become staple nights out for the locals. Visit the infamous The Dublin Castle, Electric Ballroom, Jazz Café, and The Camden Roundhouse to find your own rising star.

If your thing is exploring new cuisine, you’ll struggle to find anywhere better than Camden. From cheap street food from around the world to luxury restaurants in the stylish Primrose Hill area, you can find almost anything.

If you’re new to the area or want to learn more before your move, our Area orientation service was made for you. Enjoy a personalised tour of Camden and handpicked hotspots that meet your needs.

Where to live in Camden

Due to its popularity, Camden Town is one of the most expensive places to live in London. The area is popular with young professionals and city workers, who are drawn in by the lifestyle, transport links and varied housing market in Camden.

You’ll find a mixture of Victorian and Georgian terraced houses, apartment blocks and large Victorian homes around Camden. And if you are looking for a modern property, there are new developments like Belvard Point and XY residential available.

The upmarket, more exclusive area of Primrose Hill is favoured by families and professionals but homes here come at a premium, with the average sale price being well over £1.5 million.

There are, however, affordable properties available: apartments are priced most reasonably, and houses in the Greenland Road and Georgiana Street areas offer more for your money.
