A brief history Chiswick, London

The area known as Chiswick today was first recorded in Old English as Ceswican, or Cheese Farm, because of an annual cheese fair held up until the 18thcentury.

Today this still seems rather apt when you consider the abundance of shops selling artisan dairy products. Chiswick’s history isn’t all cheese; the popular area of Turnham Green Terrace was once the site of a battle in the English Civil War. Royalists looking to take back London were stopped by Parliamentarian forces here, never to threaten the capital again.

Throughout the Second World War, Chiswick was fiercely bombed by the Axis forces. In the latter stages of the conflict, this included the first V2 rocket to hit London. After the war, extensive rebuilding projects saw Chiswick rejuvenate and by the 21st century, it had become one of London’s most affluent suburbs.
