The name Hammersmith was first recorded in 1294 and meant quite literally, “Place with a hammer smithy or forge”. For much of its early life, Hammersmith was little more than an extended parish of the nearby affluent Fulham. All this changed with the Industrial Revolution, which transformed the area into a bustling hive of activity. Great building projects like the now grade II listed Hammersmith Bridge helped drive commerce and increase connections to the rest of London.

Culturally, Hammersmith has long had an association with iconic contributors to entertainment. The well-known riverside pub The Dove hosted the likes of Ernest Hemmingway, Graham Greene and James Thomson (author of Rule Britannia).

Musically, Hammersmith has attracted some of the most influential artists of all time, including the late David Bowie. In fact, the Hammersmith Apollo (then Hammersmith Odeon), played its part as the scene of Bowie’s final, legendary gig as the out-of-this-world Ziggy Stardust.
