Richmond upon Thames: a brief history
The area now known as Richmond didn’t exist until King Henry VII had a palace built there in the 16th century, named after his ancestral home at Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. After its construction, a village soon surrounded the palace and took its name. Despite the emerging population, much of Richmond remained as agricultural land through to the 18th century.
From here onwards, Richmond developed into one of the capital’s most desirable locations and a bridge was built between it and wider London. You can still cross this bridge today which, like the many Georgian townhouses, is a listed building.
