Somerset history

Finds of flint artefacts suggest habitation by ancestors of humans almost 500,000 years ago. Modern humans made it to the region as early as 33,000 BC, as evidenced by finds in the Mendip caves. By far the most significant discovery is that of the iconic ‘Cheddar Man’, the name given to the remains of a man dating back to around 7,150 BC. This is the oldest complete human skeleton found in Britain and has turned into something of a cultural icon.

The history of Somerset continued into the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, where agriculture and rudimentary metal work developed alongside burgeoning cultures that worshipped Celtic gods. As was the way with much of Britain, Somerset was taken over by the invading Romans in AD 47 and remained a part of the Roman Empire until AD 409. There were pockets of resistance that sprung up over the centuries, including those lead by the legendary Boudicca.

Somerset in the Middle Ages was pivotal for many reasons, but particularly so for providing refuge for the exiled Saxon king, Alfred the Great. He remained in the Somerset marshes before organising a force to defeat a Viking army in AD 878. This is widely considered to be a turning point in the history of England, as it allowed Alfred to lay the foundations for a unified nation (England at the time was a collection of smaller kingdoms).

Agriculture has always been important for Somerset and the modern era is similar, though mechanisation has meant it is no longer a major employer. In recent years, tourism has come to the forefront of Somerset’s economy and the many coastal towns, natural attractions and historical sites are major draws for visitors.

Living in Somerset

Although Somerset is a predominantly rural area, there are cosmopolitan options, such as the city of Bath. This ancient city dates back to the Romans and you can still visit the heated baths today. Its buzzing nightlife makes Bath a top destination, with heaps of excellent dining opportunities for foodies as well. Be sure to visit the organic food market held on Saturdays at Green Street for fresh local produce and delicious street food. For a spot of bohemian culture, visit Bath’s Walcot Street and have a wander around the numerous independent shops and cafés.

If you want to experience the best of Somerset village life, you can’t do much better than Wedmore. Its traditional Real Ale Festival is a highlight of the calendar and you can taste up to 60 different ales, ciders, and wines. Equally brilliant is the coastal village of Porlock, which boasts spectacular views of the ocean and its eponymous bay.

For the perfect blend between urban and rural, why not consider moving to Frome? It is a vibrant town that recently won the Sunday Times’ ‘best place to live’ award for the South West of England. With its own artisan corner, a plethora of music and art festivals and a whole host of independent shops, Frome is great town for people of all tastes.
