Sussex history

Sussex has seen human habitation for at least 500,000 years, as evidenced by the discovery of what is thought to be the oldest human fossil in Britain. Neolithic tools dating from around 35,000 years ago have been found as well, cementing Sussex as a highly important area for British archaeology. The name Sussex comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘Sūþsēaxe’, or, ‘South Saxons’. It was one of the earliest landing points for the invading Saxons after the retreat of the Roman Empire in the late 4th century.

Sussex was where the Norman invasion of 1066 began, with William the Conqueror’s forces marching to meet the Saxons at Hastings. You can still visit the ruins of Hastings Castle today, where the famous Battle of Hastings happened nearby.

Living in Sussex

Sussex really has a little something for everyone, which is a cliché we know, but we mean it. With its lush green expanses, quaint towns seeped in history, and convenient connections to London, you’re guaranteed to find somewhere you’ll love. In many ways, Sussex epitomises what some imagine the idyllic England to be. Rolling hills make way for dramatic coastlines as medieval churches dot the landscape. Spend some time enjoying a rural walk and soak in the tranquillity!

Sussex has its fair share of cosmopolitan qualities to attract even the most devoted shoppers. Churchill Square in Brighton is a thriving hub of boutique shops and global brands, with some decent entertainment options thrown in for good measure. The seaside continues to impress in the shopping department, with numerous outlets dedicated to selling vintage clothing, artisan cuisine and other eclectic products. Genuine foodies should consider heading to Kent’s historic Macknade Fine Foods, which has slowly evolved over more than 170 years of food, farming and retailing.

Where to live in Sussex

Choosing where you want to live in Sussex depends on whether you’re moving with a family, what your budget is, and whether connections to somewhere like London are important to you. You might prefer a purely rural experience, which Sussex’s many villages provide in ample amounts. Or you could be escaping London, but still plan to commute there for work; why not join your fellow Londoners in one of Sussex’s many commuter towns? We’ve detailed a few of the best places to live in Sussex below; or feel free to give us a call for more information.

Coastal energy

Brighton represents Sussex at its most unique. With a thriving LGBT community, incredible nightlife and extensive shopping opportunities, Brighton is a draw for people across the country (and around the world). The city is often referred to as London-by-the-sea, which is understandable considering the attractive metropolitan lifestyle and vast array of amenities. The benefit Brighton has over the capital is definitely its seaside vibe; the iconic Brighton Pier is a top attraction for tourists and locals alike.

Countryside living

If avoiding metropolitan life is important to you, you should think about moving to one of Sussex’s villages or towns. Litlington, with its famous white horse hill figure, is a picturesque village in East Sussex with wide expanses of fields, forests and farms. Wilmington shares a similar legacy of chalk figures with Litlington, although its 70m ‘Long Man’ is far more impressive! The village itself is quiet, but more than a few excellent nights are organised in the local pub, The Giant’s Rest. Wisborough Green in West Sussex is a village on the fringes of the South Downs, meaning you have easy access to stunning natural scenery. It’s better connected than many villages with easy access to the A272 road (which itself is a beautiful drive reminiscent of old English country roads).
