Immigration update: China | PU Letter is no longer required for M or F Visa Application

For M visa and F visa applications, PU letter is no longer a standard required document for all applicants but may be required for some specific cases and in certain countries only.

Who will be affected?

All travelers from overseas to China.

Background

PU letter was firstly required in March 2020 by Chinese authorities and this policy has been implemented since then and only those who are considered very important and urgently needed in China, were granted with PU letter. The introduction of PU letter was aimed at limiting the number of foreigners entering China to minimize the spread of COVID-19 cases.

Due to the low approval rate and lengthy and complicated application process, PU letter applications have been the biggest challenge for applicants who intended to travel to China for work purposes.

From July 2022, Chinese embassies/consulates in many countries have been releasing an extended list of the visas which can be applied for with a ‘shortened’ list of document requirements.

In addition, Family reunion visas which are for those applicants who are foreign family members of a Chinese citizen or a foreign family member of a foreigner with Permanent Residence Card in China – Q1 or Q2 visas can be applied now.

Impact

With the new policy of no requirement of PU letter for M visa application, business travel to China will be easier.

Implementation Date

1st July 2022
