Immigration update: Malaysia | Submission of Foreign Knowledge Workers (FKW) Projection for Year 2022 in Expats System

Submission of Foreign Knowledge Workers (FKW) Projection for Year 2022 in Expats System

Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) eXpats Service Centre has announced it will begin accepting projection applications from companies on their 2022 needs for foreign knowledge workers (FKW) beginning 1st November 2021.

Who are affected

Companies registered with MDEC (companies with MSC and ICT status).

Background

The eXpats Service Centre has recommended that only companies with foreign knowledge worker projection requirements (EP New/Renewal) in the first quarter of 2022 should submit their projections first.

MSC/ICT status companies are allowed to submit their foreign knowledge worker projections throughout 2022 based on their foreign-hiring needs. The 2021 foreign knowledge worker projection submission window remains open until 14th November 2021.

Impact

Foreign knowledge worker projections must be approved before applying for employment passes (both new and renewal). Any balance from FKW projection that has been approved in year 2021 will be forfeited by 31st December 2021.

Companies should plan to submit their foreign-worker projections as early as possible to avoid the year-end holiday slowdown. Although there is no official deadline for filing, companies should aim to obtain approval by 31st December 2021 to avoid any issues in submitting renewal applications, especially renewals for permits that expire in January, February or March.

Implementation

Effective from 1st November 2021.
