Immigration update: Portugal | Impact of COVID-19 on Immigration

COVID-19 Impact on Portugal Immigration – General Update

Lockdown extended until May 2nd 2020

Portuguese Government announced the extension of exceptional and temporary measures regarding the epidemiological situation of the new COVID 19 – state of emergency, valid from Apr 17th until May 2nd.

After that date, it is expected that those measures will be lifted very gradually but how this will happen in practice is under discussion and a government meeting is expected by the end of April.

Schools will remain closed and elementary school is expected to be concluded online.

The Schengen external borders closure has been extended which means border access is strictly limited and subject to the control of immigration agents.

Portuguese Embassies and Consulates remain closed for non-essential services, same for local government services.

Visa applications are suspended until May 14th, which may be extended depending on the circumstances. An announcement will be made by Ministry Of Foreign Affairs when the situation is normalised.
