Immigration update: Thailand | A further update from BOI on COVID-19

A further update from BOI (Board of Investment) regarding COVID-19

All foreign nationals need to stay in Thailand for at least 14 days upon their arrival, before their BOI Placement Approval application for visa and work permit can be submitted and approved, effective immediately.

Who will be affected?

All foreign nationals who are applying for or renewing their visa and work permit under BOI scheme in Thailand.

Background

Thai Immigration Bureau is stepping up measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Kingdom. As such, they have mandated that all foreign nationals arriving in Thailand must stay in the Kingdom for at least 14 days upon their arrival, before they can submit their Placement application or make an appointment to obtain their initial BOI work permit and long-term visa at authorities’ office (OSSC). No exemption shall be allowed in this case.

This mandatory 14-day self-quarantine also applies to foreign nationals who are due to renew their BOI work permit and long-term visa. In case there is not enough time for them to complete their 14-day self-quarantine before their visa and work permit expire, they can consult with the immigration authorities where a medical certificate may be required in order to proceed further.

Impact

Placement approval delay has now been extended to all foreign nationals. These measures will remain in effect until further notice from the BOI authorities.

Santa Fe Analysis

As COVID-19 continues to spread to more countries and infect more people, we recommend foreign nationals to practice hygiene and safety measures first, and follow the latest policies announced by the Thai government regarding COVID-19.

Foreign nationals are advised to factor the 14-day self-quarantine into their immigration timeline. For further support and advice, you can also reach out to your local Santa Fe Consultant.
