Immigration update: United Kingdom | Government public health measures on Coronavirus

UK Government current public health measures on Coronavirus Outbreak

The Coronavirus Outbreak is an evolving situation which the UK Government is paying close attention to and issuing guidance and protective measures for. There have been 2 confirmed cases of the infection in the UK so far.

  • The Foreign Secretary has issued advice that all British Nationals should leave China immediately.

Who will be affected?

  • UK Nationals in China
  • Individuals travelling or planning travel from the UK to China
  • Individuals travelling into the UK from China

Background

  • The Coronavirus Outbreak is an evolving situation and the UK Government is monitoring it closely to ensure its response is appropriate and measured at all times with regards to public health.
  • 1,466 passengers and 95 staff arrived in the UK on direct flights from Wuhan, China between 10 and 24 January 2020.
  • 93 Britons evacuated from Wuhan are currently in quarantine in a special facility in the UK while 1 who was taken ill during the repatriation flight was taken straight to hospital for full tests.

Impact

  • The Foreign Secretary has issued advice that all British Nationals should leave China immediately.
  • The FCO has issued advice to limit travel to mainland China, stating that only essential travel should be carried out to most of the country, and advising against all travel to Hubei Province on account of the outbreak.
  • Arrivals from Wuhan are being received at a special area of Terminal 4 at London Heathrow with a specialised clinical team on standby for arrival screening. Arrival screening will be applied to flights from other origins as and when the government deems it necessary.
  • Arrivals from Hubei Province are being advised to remain indoors and avoid contact with others, and to contact NHS 111 line (or 03002007885 for Northern Ireland), even if not experiencing symptoms.
  • Arrivals from elsewhere in China are being asked to do the same as above if they develop symptoms of cough, fever or shortness of breath.

Implementation

  • The above measures have already been put in place and remain under constant review.

Next Steps (or) Actions Required

  • Check for the latest on travel restrictions which may affect your route, including landing procedures where screening protocols may be instituted at short to notice by local authorities.
