Oxford history
Oxford can comfortably trace its heritage back to Saxon times (under the name ‘Oxenaforda’), where its location on the upper reaches of the River Thames gave it a strategic advantage over other nearby settlements. After the Norman invasion of 1066, Oxford evolved into a town of national significance and its eponymous university appeared in the late 12th century. Much of Oxford was absorbed by the university and by the 14th century its original history existed only as a part of the university’s.
The town was affected greatly by the English Reformation and emerged from the relative chaos as a city in its own right. It became a leading centre in Europe for theological thought, with related movements flourishing in the 19th century. When the First World War started, much of Oxford’s student population had enlisted and it left many of the university buildings empty. The Second World War was a similar affair and interestingly, the city avoided the German bombing campaigns due to a lack of essential, wartime industry. This left many of the city’s spectacular buildings intact, though Oxford did still deal with a huge influx of refugees fleeing London. Today, Oxford represents a city characterised by true diversity, education and a genuine cosmopolitan quality.
