Destinations for younger expat entrepreneurs

If you’re thinking of becoming an entrepreneurial expat and are still in need of a location, then look no further. While starting a business overseas can be an exciting journey, there are several factors to consider and the location of your business is one of the most important. Whether you want to see the places most only dream of, or you’re looking to settle in a new country for good, here at Santa Fe Relocation we’re taking a look at the less obvious destinations for young entrepreneurial expats, from Portugal to Kenya.

Vietnam

Alongside the glorious beaches, Vietnam boasts a diverse landscape. While the economy is still developing, Vietnam has seen some rapid growth in recent years, and so is highly promising for younger entrepreneurial expats. With the stability of the expat network in Vietnam, now is the perfect time to establish your identity with influential people who can lift your business off the ground. In addition to this, even though Vietnamese is the official language, English is widely spoken and so while you will need to know a few of the general phrases such as bạn khỏe không? (how are you?) and cảm ơn bạn (thank you), you certainly won’t be expected to be fluent!

Costa Rica

While opening a business in Costa Rica can seem daunting, you’ll soon be on the path to success! As well as being a popular choice for digital nomads seeking a fantastic place to live, Costa Rica is highly popular among younger entrepreneurial expats, and it’s not difficult to see why. Not only is the country a mere few hours by plane from the United States, making it an excellent location for America expats to get to and from, but here you’ll get to experience some of the world’s fastest internet connections which is perfect for tech start-ups in particular. The economy of Costa Rica has been stable for several years now, and for the time being, there’s no evidence that this will change.

Portugal

Amazing food, beautiful beaches and great cities aside, Portugal is a perfect destination for younger entrepreneurial expats. Lisbon in particular is attractive to start-ups; not only is the cost of living here much lower than in other capitals located in Western Europe, but as a result of the outstanding education system, there is a remarkable pool of local talent available, from developers to designers. More recently, building and opening a business here has become even easier. While opening a business in another part of Europe may take anywhere between a couple of days to a few weeks, it can take mere hours in Portugal. In addition to this, Lisbon has been dubbed as the counterpart to San Francisco in Europe, with the introduction of the city’s Mega Campus – a hub for creative and tech start-ups in the city.

Kenya

Then there’s Nairobi, Kenya – hidden among the Ngong Hills, the city of Nairobi has been the hub of business in East Africa for several years now but has only more recently become a destination for younger entrepreneurial expats. While business here is mostly made up of real estate industries, tourism and trade in agricultural products, there are countless opportunities when it comes to starting a range of different businesses here. From your very own e-commerce store, to opening a child care centre, there are countless small business investment opportunities across Kenya.
