Millennial expats

Sun, sea and sand aside, there are a number of reasons why more and more millennials are choosing to become expats. Millennials today no longer want to have a traditional career, sitting in an office for more than 40-hours per week and instead are searching for new ways to get the most out of life. This digitally-enabled population tend to be more open-minded than their preceding generations and are able to balance their digital and physical life far more efficiently. One way this can be achieved is by becoming an expat. Here at Santa Fe Relocation, we’re taking a closer look at the reasons behind why the expat life appeals to millennials.

Work/life balance

Compared to previous generations, today’s millennials are not as prepared to compromise and have strong emotions towards the work/life balance many wish they had. A report conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development revealed that in places where the work/life balance is not sufficient, US millennials are heading elsewhere to obtain a healthy work/life balance. The report also revealed the major factors that a country must have in order to be considered as one of the best places to live and work and these include a good income and affordable housing.

Portable careers

Today, portable careers are in greater demand than ever before. With the opportunity to travel and work at the same time, it’s not difficult to see why a rising number of millennials are turning against traditional careers. While traditional careers such as becoming a lawyer require individuals to comply with the host country’s regulations, portable careers do not. This provides millennials with the opportunity to embrace the alfresco lifestyle as a writer, web design or even a filmmaker. It is the perfect opportunity for those with a creative flair to explore the world while doing something they enjoy. Portable careers often demand high levels of skill and also are more embracing of new global technologies, something which previous generations may not have been so willing to embrace.

Ambition

Typically, new start-ups embrace ambition, creativity and input from those who have extensive international experience. This makes the millennial attitude a promising addition for many start-ups. Those with experience in different cultures can offer a breadth of opportunity and cultural understanding further helping to improve the overall reach of the company. With the ability to embrace technology such as Skype in a cohesive and balanced manner, it is often seen as an advantage to have international work experience of some kind as long as the work completed is of the highest quality.

While many often assume that a growing number of millennials are choosing to head abroad for a slower pace of life, this is not the case. Life abroad can offer just as many, if not more, opportunities than at home, making it an increasingly popular option for those wanting to get the most out of life.
