India is one of the largest and most populous countries in the world, occupying a vast peninsula in Southern Asia, often referred to as the Indian subcontinent. It enjoys a rich variety of flora and fauna.
India is a democratic republic, ranking as the world's largest democracy. It has a president elected by the members of both the central and state legislatures. Executive power is held by the prime minister and his cabinet. The president appoints the prime minister from the political party or a coalition of parties, commanding a parliamentary majority.
India has initiated economic reforms to strengthen and modernize its economy and attract more foreign investment. Particularly critical is the upgrading of the country's limited infrastructure.
India weathered the global economic crisis with strong growth numbers above eight percent for 2010. In fact, the country's economy has grown by more than seven percent annually since 1997.
Temporary furnished and unfurnished accommodations may be available for short periods of time, although in some popular areas such accommodation is scarce. The quality of accommodations varies, both in design and construction. It is advisable to try to get a sense of how well-maintained the property is, and asking other tenants about the water supply (particularly during hot, dry summers) and the reliability of electricity is a good idea. Newly constructed buildings in the upper income range tend to be of high quality. Traditional colonial houses still exist, but are rare and tend to be difficult and expensive to maintain.
Most expatriates send their children to international schools. Indian schools usually are in session during the preferred vacation time for foreigners.
Indian schooling starts in Kindergarten, and follows the "10+2" format. Primary and secondary school lasts through age 15, after which students may go on to two years of higher secondary classes, or three-year technical programs. Education is universal for children ages 6-14. Schools are certified by one of a number of education boards. In total, there are over one million schools in India
