Moving to Mongolia

"Mongolia is a large, landlocked country sandwiched between two of the largest countries in the world: Russia and China. It also has one of the lowest population densities on the planet, with 4.7 people per square mile.

It has just under three million inhabitants, enjoys a 97% literacy rate, and claims the coldest capital city in the world. Ulaanbaatar has winter temperatures plunging as low as -57°C/-70°F. It is also one of the sunniest cities in the world, with an average of 260 days of sunshine, thanks to high pressure.

Mongolia's economy had traditionally relied on agriculture and herding, a livelihood that has influenced nearly all aspects of life, at least in rural areas. In recent years, Mongolia's mining industry has developed and is responsible for bringing foreign interest – and workers – to the country. Deposits of copper, coal, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and gold fuel the industry.

Tourism is another burgeoning industry, thanks to the country's uniqueness and beauty"

"Mongolia's chief of state is the President and head of government is the Prime Minister. Presidential elections are held every four years.

There is a unicameral legislature, State Great Khural, with 76 seats elected to four-year terms by popular vote. "

Mongolia is an ancient, unique country with much the world values – natural beauty, mineral resources – and is in the process of struggling to manage those valuable resources and the foreign interest they attract. Ulaanbaatar's growing expatriate population both affects and is affected by the rate of economic growth and the quality of life dictated by it.

The expatriate housing market is growing every day with new developments in the south end of the city (away from the yurt districts and pollution); however, there are very few amenities in this area, and traffic can make the drive to the nearest grocery or department store about 30-40 minutes away. There are also some townhouse developments in the south-center (not as far from the center) area of U-B. Due to fierce demand, these residences can be very expensive by Mongolian standards, and there can also be a one or two year waiting list.

Expatriates looking for international education have a few options around Ulaanbaatar. The International School of Ulaanbaatar (ISU) offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum for preschool-age children through grade 12. In September 2007, ISU moved into a new campus southeast of the National Stadium, at Four Seasons Gardens.

The Hobby School is a 13-year-old institution with 11 grades and instruction in English and Mongolian. It is located in the Sukhbaatar District of the capital.
