London: history of the capital city

The UK’s capital city has undergone several transformations, creating the multicultural and historical city of today. The ancient city of London was founded by the Romans (and named Londinium), almost 2,000 years ago. However, the Roman city lasted less than 15 years, before it was burnt to the ground by Boudicca, the legendary Celtic queen. A bigger and stronger city rose in its place. That London has also long since crumbled, continuing a theme of destruction and rejuvenation.

The city was destroyed once again by the Great Fire of London in 1666, which saw much of the city’s then-wooden architecture completely destroyed. But the city once again rose from the flames, growing into the impressive and sprawling metropolis that would become modern day London.

Today, London thrives as one of the world’s most important cities, attracting people from all walks of life. Everything from its world-class cuisine, renowned buildings, to the fascinating history, makes London a truly special place to live.

The cost of living in London

It’s no secret that the cost of living in London is higher than the rest of the UK, and a good deal of the world as well. The city’s economy counters this with significantly higher wages, meaning savvy individuals could end up generating a decent nest egg. Additionally, moving to London means being aware of the property prices which, like the cost of living, are generally higher than elsewhere.

Of course it depends where in London you move to; at the top end of the housing market, house prices in Chelsea could see you pay up to £3,000 per square metre. As a rule of thumb, properties in Zones 1 and 2 are more expensive than properties on the outskirts. Treat the word ‘outskirts’ with a pinch of salt though; London’s excellent public transport makes getting anywhere in the city pretty easy.

Transport in London

London has some of the most impressive transport links of anywhere in the world. The system of buses, trains and the underground system running almost constantly, you will be able to get anywhere and everywhere by public transport.

All of London’s buses, underground and overground trains use an electronic payment ticket called an Oyster card. You can either order one online, or pickup one from the many different shops, kiosks and newsagents across London. When you need to top it up, either use the Oyster card machines present in every London train station, or do it on the Oyster card website (Transport for London). Our personal advice? Catch the bus a few times before you use the tube. It’s a great way to get a clearer picture of London and it’s cheaper!
