The history of Fulham

Fulham, like many of today’s most popular and upmarket London boroughs, has had quite the change in fortunes.

The name Fulham is derived from ‘Fulanhamme’, which means ‘the place of fowls/mud’. The original name was based on the village’s location: thanks to its close proximity to the River Thames, Fulham was prone to flooding.

In the 1700’s the area was populated and frequented by more salacious individuals: it was home to gambling, drinking and prostitution. But today things have completely changed, and the area is an upmarket, prosperous and chic location!

Where to live in Fulham

Fulham has a large selection of property types and sizes, but the Victorian and Edwardian houses here are consistently popular thanks to the space and good-sized gardens on offer. Some of the most sought are properties in the area are the Lion Houses on the Peterborough Estate – so called due to the terracotta lions that decorate the gables.

The Moor Park Estate and Peterborough Estate are highly popular, and as a result property here comes at a premium. More affordable properties are available in Parsons Green and Eel Brooke Square, which are both very popular with young professionals.

Fulham enjoys incredible transport links, as well as being an incredibly walkable area. Sat in Zone 2, Fulham is serviced by Fulham Broadway Tube Station which operates the District Line. On this line, you can reach The City in under 30 minutes. There is also the Imperial Wharf Overground stop, from which you can quickly reach Clapham Junction and Shepard’s Bush for access of other tube lines around the city.

Via bus, you can easily and cheaply reach much of London and Fulham’s surrounding boroughs. There are frequent bus services from Fulham to Liverpool Street, Notting Hill, Piccadilly Circus, Waterloo and more.
