The most popular time to move

If you’re planning to make that all-important move this year, it’s a good idea to have a clear understanding of the best time to move. While not all of us will have the same moving schedule, some months are noticeably more popular. While packing and moving services are in demand year-round, in order to make the moving process as easy as possible for you and your family, here at Santa Fe Relocation, we’re giving you a closer insight into the most popular times in the year to move to ensure that you’re prepared for the journey ahead. Here’s what you need to know:

Do more people move in the summer months?

While you can move cross-country or abroad at any time of the year, several move-in dates fall in the summer months. Generally, between March to June are the busiest times of year for selling a property and for the most part, it’s relatively easy to see why. With the sun shining and the summer months generally being a fantastic time to sell your home, it’s clear that summer is the best time to sell up your property and move into your next property once all of the finer details are finalised in the summer. In countries like South Africa, however, you should rent or buy a property as soon as you are able to afford it as the time of year doesn’t matter much in the market. Regardless of whether you choose to move here in the summer or winter months, you will be faced with the same challenges such as the unfamiliarity with various processes and acclimatising to the weather.

Moving home before September

Moving home before school begins is one of the main reasons as to why the summer months are popular for movers. With children not being required to attend school for a period of six weeks in the UK, more focus is able to be put on finalising the details of the move and actually moving into a new home. Even though moving to a new school can be incredibly tough for young children to come to terms with, having broken up from school, they will not be taken away from their day-out-day routine entirely. Moving to a new school can present many challenges during the school term, including the need to adapt to a new school schedule and meet teachers and classmates alike. This is particularly true when it comes to exam season as schools can teach curriculum in different orders, meaning entire modules could be missed with a mid-school year move. By moving your child to a new school during the summer, you’ll both have enough time to adjust to your new environments. There are a number of other benefits to moving home in the summer too. The best time to rent in Dubai, for example, is during the summer and Ramadan as rent prices tend to fall, helping those seeking the opportunity to rent a decent-sized property the chance to get a great deal.

Moving without a family

Even though moving during the peak summer months is popular among families with children, particularly in the UK, those without a family in tow will often choose to move during the late winter/early spring over any other time of the year. While research by Rent.com suggests that in the US summer offers more options due to more turnover in rental units at this time of year, renters are able to save a lot more money if they look to rent between December and April. This is due to turnover typically being much slower, meaning you’re likely to find a better deal during these months.

Moving home at Christmas

The spring/summer months may be the most popular time of the year to move for most people, but you shouldn’t ignore the winter months if you are planning to move this year. Moving in the winter is often a great way to save money, not just on the apartment itself, but also on the relocation services. With less people moving in the winter months, relocation services’ calendars are likely to be less full and could therefore be more accommodating to any last minute changes. However, remember that you will need to navigate all of the celebrations and ensure that you are moved in before Christmas to ensure that you are not left stranded when many businesses shut for the holidays.
