Important update in relation with Immigration Office for medical leave in Romania

Overview
Medical leaves that result in the suspension of the individual employment contract, as recorded in REGES-Online, constitute changes to the employment relationship that must be reported to the competent authorities.
Who will be affected?
All Non EU citizens with active individual employment contract which will have to suspend the employment contracts in REGES-Online due to medical leaves, starting with January 1st, 2026.

Starting with January 1st, 2026.
Santa Fe recommendation
We recommend the following steps to comply with the legal provisions:
- The registration of the suspension in REGES-Online must be completed within the applicable legal deadline (3 days), and
- The notification to the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) must be made within 3 or 5 working days, as applicable, from the date the suspension occurs, in accordance with Government Ordinance no. 25/2014.
Please note that reporting in REGES-Online does not replace the separate obligation to notify IGI, as these two requirements are independent.
