AI and automation in Global Mobility

Global Mobility is operating under sustained pressure. Administrative demand continues to absorb capacity while expectations around compliance, visibility and reporting continue to increase. Many programmes still rely on manual processes and fragmented systems, limiting the ability to respond with speed and accuracy.

This report examines how organisations are addressing that challenge. Based on insights from 57 Global Mobility and HR professionals, it identifies where intelligent systems can deliver measurable value across core operational areas, including reporting, data consolidation, case management and policy support. 38% of teams report that more than 10% of annual capacity is still spent on repetitive administrative tasks, reinforcing the scale of the opportunity.

The findings highlight a clear shift. Automation is being evaluated as a practical solution to reduce administrative workload and improve data visibility, while maintaining governance and professional accountability. Operational burden is rated at 7.5 out of 10, reflecting sustained pressure across routine activity. Adoption remains measured, shaped by concerns around data privacy, regulatory exposure, system integration and the reliability of outputs.

The report also sets out how organisations can approach AI as part of their operational infrastructure. It introduces a capability maturity framework, outlining how programmes can progress from manual processes to more advanced, integrated models where automation supports consistency, visibility and scale. Progression depends on strong data foundations, clear ownership of governance and defined validation processes.

At the same time, the role of the Global Mobility function is evolving. As administrative activity becomes more structured and system-supported, there is greater opportunity to focus on advisory work, workforce planning and strategic alignment with business objectives. Human judgement remains central, particularly in areas requiring interpretation, stakeholder engagement and regulatory expertise.

This is a structural shift in how Global Mobility operates. The organisations that move deliberately, with clear governance and disciplined integration, will be better positioned to reduce operational strain, strengthen control and increase their strategic impact.
