Corporate Immigration — Portugal extends Decree for expired documents until June 2024

Overview
The government of Portugal, through Decree No. 109/2023 of November 24, once again extended the regularity of expired residence permits and expired visas until June 30, 2024.
Who will be affected?
All people with expired documentation or documents about to expire will be automatically regularized in the country until this date, as AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum) is in a transition period from the old SEF to this new agency that will be responsible for part of the regularizations of immigrants in Portugal.
Background
This extension occurs because the Portuguese government has not been able to respond appropriately to all ongoing document renewal processes.
Impact
The SIGA portal, an interface for the Portuguese public service, now handles bookings for renewal of appointments. In particular, since 2020, applicants have been able to complete the renewal procedure through a completely digital process. However, they must now schedule an in-person appointment. This Decree extends the validity of visas and residence permits until June 2024, but is only recognized within Portugal’s national borders.
