Immigration update — India Introduces e-Arrival Card for Foreign Traveler’s
Overview
Effective 01 October 2025, the Government of India has officially introduced a mandatory e-Arrival Card for all foreign nationals entering India. This digital system replaces the traditional paper-based disembarkation (arrival) card, representing a significant step toward faster immigration clearance and India’s broader digital transformation in border processing.
Who will be affected?
All foreign nationals entering India – regardless of visa type, including e-Visa, sticker visa, business, employment, tourist, student, medical or conference visas – must comply with this requirement.
Indian passport holders and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders are exempt.
Frequent travellers, business visitors, and tourists will benefit from reduced processing times and simplified arrival procedures at major Indian airports.
Background
Previously, foreign travellers arriving in India were required to complete physical disembarkation cards either onboard or at immigration counters. In line with global best practices, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) have launched the digital e-Arrival Card system. This initiative aims to streamline immigration clearance, improve passenger convenience, and enhance data accuracy and security.
Impact
Traveler’s arriving in India must complete the e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival. After submission, a digital confirmation (QR code or reference number) is generated and automatically integrated into India’s immigration system, ensuring faster, contactless processing at major international airports.
Date of implementation
Effective 01 October 2025
During a six-month transition period, physical arrival cards will continue to be accepted. However, travellers are encouraged to switch to the digital e-Arrival Card for a faster and more convenient experience. No document uploads or fees are required, though authorities recommend carrying a copy of the confirmation email for inspection.
Santa Fe recommendation
Foreign nationals traveling to India must complete the e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before departure using official channels only, such as the Indian Visa Online Portal or the Su-Swagatam Mobile App. Accurate data entry is essential to avoid delays during immigration clearance. Travel coordinators, mobility teams, and global immigration managers should update pre-travel checklists and inform travellers of this mandatory requirement. A digital or printed copy of the submission confirmation should be retained for presentation upon request.
