Corporate Immigration update — Updated salary thresholds for the German Blue Card — What you need to know
Santa Fe publication date
14.01.2026
Overview
Effective 1. January 2026, Germany has recently increased the salary requirements for Blue Card applications, a highly sought-after visa for skilled workers with a university degree.
Who will be affected?
All non-EU nationals with a job offer in Germany who meet the general requirements for a Blue Card must ensure that they satisfy the updated salary threshold in order to apply for the visa. Existing Blue Card holders currently in Germany, seeking to renew their permits, are also required to meet the new salary criteria for the renewal process.
Background
The salary threshold for the Blue Card is tied to social security contributions and is recalculated annually based on national statistics. For 2026, this has resulted in an increase in the salary requirement for the Blue Card visa. However, a lower threshold applies to professions in shortage occupations, such as IT specialists, engineers, and medical doctors.
Impact
Foreign nationals holding a recognized degree and a job contract of at least six months must earn a minimum gross salary of € 50.700 per year. For shortage occupations, such as IT specialists, engineers, and medical professionals, the required salary is reduced to at least € 45.934,20 gross annually.
Important Considerations
- Check if your degree is recognised
- Check if you meet the salary requirement (also relevant for renewals!)
- Check the special requirements for shortage occupations
- Check if your application is complete to avoid delays
Date of implementation
1 January 2026
