Corporate Immigration — Portugal reinstates in-person renewal for migrant residence permits
Starting on the afternoon of Monday, 30th October, migrants with expired Residence Permits now need to apply for renewal, reflecting significant modifications to the renewal process.
The SIGA portal, the comprehensive interface for services by the Portuguese public service, now handles the reservations for renewal appointments. Notably, since 2020, applicants could complete the renewal procedure through a fully digital process. However, they must now schedule an appointment for an in-person visit.
The renewal process deviates from the previous methods practised before the abolition of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF). Applicants must now personally attend a Citizen’s Store or Registry Office to complete their renewal. They must organise this by scheduling an appointment in advance. The Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN), rather than the nascent Agency for Integration, Migrations, and Asylum (AIMA), currently oversees this task.
A standing decree extends the validity of visas and resident permits until 31st December. This extension, however, is only recognised within the national borders of Portugal.
The Parliamentary Affairs Office, responsible for Migration Affairs, has communicated that the future AIMA portal, which will succeed the SEF’s remit, is set to feature an option for the renewal of residence permits. The authorities project to introduce this portal by the end of 2023, although they have not yet established a definitive date.
