French authorities have postponed the opening of the online platform for “post-Brexit residence card applications” to 1st October 2020. It was initially scheduled to be released on 1st July but the Covid-19 crisis has delayed finalization of the platform.
As part of the Brexit transition period that is due to end on 31 December 2020, UK nationals currently living in France or settling residence before year ends need no work permit and no residence permit. However, they will have until 1 July 2021 to apply for a post-Brexit status and residence card with their local prefecture. The online platform (http://invite.contacts-demarches.interieur.gouv.fr/BREXIT) will dematerialize applications and allow authorities to absorb flows more easily.
As a reminder, UK nationals entering France on or after 1 January 2021 will be “third-country nationals” in terms of immigration and required to apply for common statuses such as European Blue Card or Visitor for their long stays in the country.
However currently, negotiations between the UK and the EU on post-Brexit relations are not progressing as fast as hoped when Brexit occurred, on 31 January 2020. If the parties are not successful in finding an agreement on time, and don’t postpone the end of transition date, Brexit might end with a No Deal. That would leave the UK nationals residing in France with a full work and residence permit requirement as of next year.
